Häxan (aka Witchcraft Through the Ages)

Video CD - on 2 CD's - viewable on Quicktime

Häxan combines real life footage, animated sequences and dramatic fiction. Based on genuine witchcraft trials, it presents some of the traditional motifs associated with sorcery -- confessions extracted under torture, a witches' sabbath and contemporary scenes of possession; many of which are genuinely grotesque with echoes of Bosch and Goya.

"Creates an atmosphere of fanaticism in its intense suffering images of human faces riven by bewilderment and pain. Its obsessed with the mystique of cruelty and depravity carries it almost into the realms of medical research." National Film Theatre
