3308 – Postcard from Glastonbury Abbey: The Virgin Mary

Physical description:
A small postcard with a close up image of the Othery Cope on it.
Museum classification:
Goddess
Size:
15cm x 10cm
Information:

The following text appears in Revelation: A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.

This has been interpreted as referring to the Virgin Mary but it may link to earlier forms of Goddess worship (the Goddess is often associated with the crescent moon and in earlier times the horns of a cow - Isis).  See Marina Warner's book "Alone of All Her Sex" for more on this topic.

This image appeared on a Medieval Cope (which is now displayed in Glastonbury Abbey).  Glastonbury is now a centre for Goddess worship.
