Bracelet made of snowflake obsidian chips (a black volcanic glass with white flecks), strung on elastic thread.

Part of a collection of gemstone jewellery that belonged to Julia Pearce. She also had several books on the magical and healing properties of crystals and gemstones, now in the museum library.

Obsidian - a type of naturally occurring volcanic glass - is considered magically powerful in many cultures. The Elizabethan magician John Dee obtained an obsidian ritual mirror that had been looted from the Aztecs (which is now in the British Museum) - the origin of the use of dark mirrors in European magic.
