In Egyptian mythology Isis is particularly associated with magic. According to one legend she acquired magical power by persuading the God Ra to tell her his secret name - a story which is perhaps linked with the origins of the use of Sacred Names of God as magical Words of Power.

She was also associated with the Greek Mystery Tradition (see Apuleius, 'The Golden Ass').
