Universal Pictures released a lot of seminal horror films in the 1930s. These were not seen as Halloween films until the 1960s when they were re-released for television. Since then, Universal has gone to great lengths to stress that "Universal is Halloween." The story, the Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe has no direct link to Halloween but it has become a Halloween classic appearing in numerous collections as a suitable story to read aloud on October 31st. This is one of the reasons that black cats have become so vividly connected with Halloween in many people's minds.
