'Old Tales retold: Bewitched on Sampson' Anecdotal report of how Augustus Smith, a Hertfordshire squire, who later made his home on the Isles of Scilly, decided to remove a reputed 'white witch' from the remote island of Sampson. After his offers for relocation were flatly refused, Smith left her saying that he would return with workmen who would 'pull off the roof over her head'. Upon reaching his boat however, he lost all ability to move - not 'until the boatman signalled wildly to the woman standing at her doorway was he released from the spell.'
