3190 – Poster for ‘Haunted Mansion’
- Museum classification:
- Halloween exhibition
A poster for the first haunted house experience in America, which opened in New Orleans Square in 1969. It included a grave yard, a seance parlour, with disembodied heads speaking from a crystal ball, and a cobweb strewn ball room. It is a permanent feature at Disneyland theme parks across the world and every Halloween the houses are reinvented embracing new fashions. A soundtrack for the house was also made available on LP, see Object No 3122.
The idea of a Halloween 'experience' influenced generations of Americans to create their 'yard' displays and parties on Halloween.
