Archive Access

The MWM Collection and Library are freely searchable online.

You do not need access to our archives to search either the Collection, or Library.

Information about objects, magical practices and the museum’s history and is contained in the free online collection record and can this be accessed from anywhere, 24 hours per day.

Besides the Museum Library and Collection records, which are freely searchable online, The Museum of Witchcraft & Magic has a large archive containing original material and MSS on a variety of topics.  Prior registration to use the archive is required.

The material includes the Pickingill Papers, Gerald Gardner letters and manuscripts, the Alex Sanders Archive, the Cecil Williamson Object Label Collection, the Cecil Williamson Notebooks and manuscripts, as well as numerous items written by and concerning a host of other magical practitioners.

We keep, preserve and make available this material to researchers in our physical archive at the Museum (viewed by appointment). In season, appointments are hard to come by and are only available on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays. The Library is open on these days by appointment 10.30 – 12.30 and 13.30 – 16.30. A condition of entry is that all bags and phones must be left with the office, and any permitted photography must be carried out by a museum staff member.

If you wish to view the MWM Archive online, you must first email the Museum at access@mwm.museum with a request for access. From 2021, there may be a charge for this process, in line with other specialist archives nationally and internationally.

After emailing please be patient as Museum staff will need to review your request – this may take up to 14 working days.
