Paracelsus (aka Theophrastus von Hohenheim) was an important figure in the German Renaissance. Born in Switzerland in 1493, he trained as a physician in Italy, and then travelled widely across Europe, Russia and the Middle East. Like the great earlier physician Dioscorides, Paracelsus was drawn to the knowledge of practitioners of traditional folk medicine, which led him to reject the then prevailing theory that health was related to the four humours. Instead, he became a very influential champion of the experimental method and the study of nature.
