These monkey skulls were originally part of Charles Wade's collection of magical objects at Snowshill Manor in Gloucestershire. His inventory of the 'Witches' Garret' describes them as being from St Kitts in the West Indies.
According to Cecil Williamson, 'Witches regard monkeys as being spirits in human form. So in the south west it is no surprise to find monkey skulls stored away in witches' trunks and used in magic making.' He goes on to mention monkey skulls that 'once belonged to a Kingsbridge witch called Kitty Dunn or Nunn, obtained from an antiquarian who acquired them in 1913 together with various other animal remains - teeth, tusks and polished bones.'
