Like toads, newts produce poisonous secretions from their skin to protect them from predators. Some species are so toxic they have been seen to climb unharmed from the mouths of their dead victims. This is probably why Shakespeare included eye of newt in the ingredients of his witches' brew in 'Macbeth'.
