1517 – Charm: Shamrock

Physical description:
Lucky charm - a green glass heart-shape, with the impression of a shamrock leaf on the back, coloured green. With a copper mount.
Museum classification:
Protection
Size:
25 x 20 x 3
Information:

There are large numbers of heart-shaped good luck charms in the Lovett Collection in the Cuming Museum, which according to Edward Lovett were generally carried as amulets for good health. One incorporates a clover-leaf design very similar to this one.
Scarborough Museum also has several heart charms (some originally from Edward Lovett's collection), mainly for good luck, although one - made from amber - is a cure for rheumatism, and three - made from Blue John, New Zealand jade and jet - are charms against witchcraft; and one also has a four-leaf-clover (real?) inside a plain glass heart, attached to a safety-pin-type pin (from Scarborough, 1944) (information provided by Tabitha Cadbury - see her report 'The Clarke Collection of Charms and Amulets' in the museum library).
