First World War Fums Up good luck charm is a tiny metal doll with a wooden head, with its hands in the thumbs up gesture. Its arms are articulated so it can touch its own head, it has Fums Up on its chest, wings on its heels, and a shamrock on its head

Large numbers of these dolls were given by girlfriends and family to soldiers going to fight in World War I. The accompanying verses include the explanation This Charm, just born, Must bring Good Luck, Its head is Touchwood, Its name is Fumsup. Also the rather poignant lines When Romans fought With sword and knife, The sign  Thumbs Up Meant spare his life.
