The Horseshoe.
This is one of the best known good luck charms in the world. You will find one nailed to a door in every village in the country.
It combines several lucky symbols: the horse, the crescent shape and iron.
The lunar shape may represent the Goddess Diana who was said to be guardian of doors and houses.
Nelson had a horseshoe nailed to the mast of his flagship the 'Victory'.
The Horniman Museum has a very similar horseshoe charm, collected by Edward Lovett, which the label says was made from a German shell and worn by a French soldier during World War One.
