1889 – NAZAR BONCUGU EYE CHARM

Physical description:
Elaborate Turkish amulet against the Evil Eye (Nazar Boncugu). Embossed white metal incorporating 6 hemispherical blue and white glass eye beads, with a blue and white glass eye disc hanging below.

Probably intended to be hung up as a house protection charm. The upper part consists of two metal plaques; the top one is six-sided and incorporates three eye beads, and has two crescent moons and two stars (possibly simply derived from the Turkish flag) embossed on it; the lower one is triangular, with two crescent moons, and with one bead, but with four metal decorations attached, two with eye beads. Hanging from the point of the triangle is a particularly fine glass eye disc. Triangular amulets are common in the Middle East (see 1707).
