This object was found with a collection of charms which may perhaps have originally been collected by Edward Lovett. Animal forms were popular lucky charms. T. Cadbury, 16/09/2011.

Although in Britain today the black cat is considered the pre-eminent lucky animal, in the early 20th century pigs were also considered lucky - as they still are in Northern European countries such as Germany (see  https://blutundhexenkunst.wordpress.com/2017/04/08/an-introduction-to-glucksbringer-part-1/). According to Cecil Williamson's texts these charms were particularly popular as gambling charms.

As well as being very valuable animals to European farmers (particularly smallholders), pigs (and wild boar) are significant in both Celtic and Norse mythology.
