4185 Lincoln Imp Horsebrass
- Physical description:
- Lincoln Imp horsebrass. The Imp is a horned and furry figure with a somewhat grotesque human-like face.
- Museum classification:
- Protection
- Size:
- 78 x 73 x 3
- Information:
According to medieval legend, the Lincoln Imp was a spirit who caused havoc in the cathedral until turned to stone by an angel.
A 17th century shoe was recently discovered incorporated into the wall of Wells Cathedral as a protection charm - perhaps because it was thought that rebuilding work created a weak spot where mischievous spirits like the Lincoln Imp could gain entry, or perhaps to stop the Devil sabotaging the work. The original Lincoln Imp was carved between 1250 and 1280. It seems likely that he represents some kind of Nature Spirit, similar, in a way, to the Green Man carvings in many churches. The Imp was popularised as a souvenir and good luck charm in the late 19th century by the Lincoln jeweller James Ward Usher, who manufactured brooches, spoons and other items featuring the Imp. There seem to be similarities with the popularity of Cornish Pisky charms and souvenirs at around the same time.
The Lincoln Imp is now the mascot of Lincoln City Football Club.
