4292 – Wooden Spirit Figure
- Physical description:
- An enigmatic stylised figure very simply carved out of a thick but flat piece of wood. The head is considerably larger than would be in proportion to the body if it represented a human, and the facial features are very simple. Interestingly, though, the mouth can be seen as smiling or downturned depending on how the figure is viewed.
- Museum classification:
- New Orleans Tradition / Voodoo
- Size:
- 150 x 70 x 18
- Information:
Part of the collection of objects in the Voodoo Priest's Box, MWM id. 4220.
Highly simplified figures like this generally represent spirits. They are deliberately not naturalistic depictions of humans because they do not represent living human beings. It is likely that this figure represents a spirit of particular significance to the Voodoo Priest - possibly an ancestral spirit.
