A bunch of ash keys carried in the hand, or better still tucked into the top of the left stocking, were regarded as personal safeguards against harm by witches. This belief was strongly held in Wales, Lancashire, Cumberland, Westmoreland, The Isle of Man and Northern Ireland.
Ash keys are the seeds from the Ash tree
