2659 – ROMAN AMULET WITH PHALLUSES

Physical description:
Roman amulet (probably bronze) in the form of a triple phallus. Scratch marks in centre and dot marks on phallus, possible small chip on base.
Museum classification:
Protection
Size:
50 x 57 x 10
Information:

The accompanying dealer's description says that the triple phallus is a symbol of strength and fertility. It also says that this is a hanging bowl mount. However, it is probably an amulet that was worn as a pendant (it is very similar to other examples). The large ring is explained by the fact that the pendants were attached by bronze straps to whatever went round the person's neck. They were often worn by children.
Often these amulets had a hand in the mano in fica gesture instead of one of the phalluses.
