2554 – Knife: small bronze Dagger

Physical description:
A small bronze decorative or ceremonial knife. It is cast in a single piece, and not sharp; the blade and integral handle are curved, and are rough on one side, with the handle section having simple cross-hatching on the other.
Museum classification:
Modern Witchcraft
Size:
25 x 130 x 8
Information:

Part of a collection of magical objects (MoW id nos 2522-2556) owned by Gerald Gardner and exhibited at the Witches Mill on the Isle of Man. Has accompanying folder of documentation.
In this case the accompanying documentation does not seem consistent with the object. The description reads, "This cast bronze miniature dagger has nine three inch blades." There is no visible way other blades could be fitted to this knife, which in any case has a four inch blade. However, the object clearly reflects Gerald Gardner's interest in unusual and ceremonial knives, and resembles the Malay parang illustrated on page 60 of his book 'Keris and Other Malay Weapons' (library no. 306.4 GAR 6202). In the book Gardner describes a special type of parang, with projecting metal spirals, which was apparently placed beneath a sick person's bed in healing magic.
