Physical description:
Pair of gold-coloured quartz balls.
Museum classification:
Divination, Fortune Telling and Scrying
Size:
100mm
Information:

This pair of golden-coloured quartz balls were used for divination by Kathy Collins of Kit Hill near Callington. They were either rolled down a slope or thrown. (Adapted from text by Cecil Williamson.) Original Cecil Williamson text: "One can say that the witches in the south west are much given to playing with their balls. Witch balls come in many forms and sizes and are made of numerous materials, generally the witch makes use of just two balls such as the pair seen here formed from a quartz like stone. Their method of use is almost always by rolling either down a slope, making use of the spirit force of gravity or by throwing when the witch works in conjunction with her familiar spirit. From such throws a reading or verdict is arrived at. This pair of witch balls were used by a crafty Kathy Collins of Kit Hill near Callington. She was a great roller."
Scarborough Museum has a good luck charm consisting of a small white quartz pebble with gold-coloured veins, collected in Leicestershire in 1911, as well as several other magical stones (information provided by Tabitha Cadbury - see her report 'The Clarke Collection of Charms and Amulets' in the museum library).
