Original text by Cecil Williamson: 'These are five examples of a west country witch's craftsmanship in making talismans. They are written and painted upon parchment. The designs and colour codes are taken from well known books of gnostic magic which interpreted sacred writings by a mystic philosophy. Such books came into use in the 1600's in the United Kingdom. Talismans were in demand as a means of securing protection and good fortune. These examples were produced in Exeter around 1910, by a Mrs Rhoda Roberts.'
