3688 – “Witchdoctors’ Bones”

Physical description:
A black faux leather bag, containing five objects intended to be used for divination. They consist of two small roundish brown objects that look as if they could be parts of nut shells, a very small elongated object that looks convincingly like a small bone, and two larger elongated objects again convincingly resembling bones. There is also an explanatory booklet made of cream coloured card. This is a commercially made product intended as a way to introduce the purchaser to South African divination, so it seems unlikely that it contains real bones.
Museum classification:
African Magic
Size:
15 x 15 cm
Information:

A commercially made product by Roots which claims to help the user learn the secrets of South African fortune telling.

The explanatory booklet suggests that there should be a total of twelve objects which would be thrown for divination. When donated, the bag contained five objects, so it would seem that some are missing.
