There are old legends of a witch of Wookey Hole and of a connection between this cave and witchcraft.  The traditional story is that a witch lived in the cave until she was killed by a monk (he blessed the water in the cave so she turned to stone, her petrified body remained in the cave).

In 1912, a thousand year old skeleton was found in the cave and people concluded that it was the witch’s skeleton and that the stories were true.  The cave was opened to the public in 1927 and now houses a       resident witch for tourists to meet.
