2313 – Charm or Talisman in form of elephant

This object was found in a box labelled 'war time charms'. It was attached to a display board together with other animal-shaped charms. 2313-2316 were attached to the same board and others had become detached. I suggest that this object may have originally been collected by Edward Lovett, who collected and wrote about WWI soldiers' mascots. Animals were a popular lucky charm motif. There are a number of elephant-shaped charms in the Scarborough Museums Trust's Clarke collection. According to the labels these were intended to impart strength and wisdom to the wearer. Lovett also wrote about 'modern commercial amulets'. T. Cadbury, 16/09/2011.
