373 – Athame: Knife with deer’s foot handle

Physical description:
Athame with a hilt made from a deer's foot, and a slim blade.
Museum classification:
Modern Witchcraft
Size:
180 long
Information:

This athame originally belonged to Upperhundred Priest Nicholas Woodley, who lost it at White Leaf Cross around 1977. How it found its way to the Museum is a mystery.
(However, Archive document no. 190 suggests that this athame may have been purchased by Cecil Williamson from The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Leeds, in 1979. It's possible that these knives have been popular for use as athames for some time, and Nicholas Woodley's was an identical one rather than this one.)
