Candle magic is simple, effective and popular. Carefully choose the colour of a candle, and inscribe a rune, name or magical sign in the wax, or magically charge a pin or two and push them in. Light the candle at an appropriate time and watch it while meditating on the desired outcome. This forms the basis of many a powerful spell. Pierced candles are also used by some witches to remove curses or ill luck.
A visitor to the museum from Germany has told us that her parents, who live in Bavaria, used to light black candles (known as weather candles) during thunder storms as protection from lightning.Possibly related to document 8076 which reads: "FRED LARKIN'S LIGHT
Fred lived in Norwich and passed on in 1918. In his day he was better known as a green doctor, dispensing all manner of herb pills and potions to those in need and trouble. But he also worked magic using the candle lore as set forth in the sorcerer's books. To that end he made use of this outsized candle stick holder and true to form he used only pure bees-wax candles.
