The anchor derives its name from the Egyptian magical symbol 'the ankh'.
It is usually depicted with a rope or chain wrapped around it, and is sometimes known as the 'fouled anchor' or 'anchor of hope'.
This has been a popular charm for travellers, especially sailors.
In some Catholic churches, miniature anchors are sometimes left as ex-voto offerings to ensure the safe return of sailors and fishermen.
The symbol is also sometimes used as a charm to 'anchor' a loved one to their partner.
