4320 – Fortune Telling Doll

Physical description:
A small ceramic doll with a rather delicate face and hands, wearing a felt cape, and with a skirt consisting of numerous (probably a hundred or more) folded papers, in different colours (muted blues, reds, golds etc.). Poetic fortunes are handwritten on the papers (the papers have to be unfolded outwards at the base to read them). The doll is also holding small scrolls of paper in her left hand. Originally she would have stood on some kind of rotating stand that would have been spun to select the fortunes. Victorian.
