1765 – Poppet: Doll

Physical description:
Red fabric doll with 5 black and 5 white pins, and writing on its body to indicate the points where the pins should be stuck in - some for misfortune and some for good fortune. With shirt-button eyes added.
Museum classification:
Curses
Size:
240 x 130 x 40
Information:

Found on the floor of a rock club in Newcastle-upon-Tyne c. 1995.
Commercially made (see 1819, also 635 & 636). Basically humorous (misfortunes include 'bounced check' and 'fleas', and good fortune includes 'kittens' and 'enlightenment').
Parts of the seams have been restitched - perhaps to insert something. The button eyes certainly suggest it may have been personalised.
