1286 – Sword

Physical description:
Elegant, small ritual sword with steel blade, brass guard and pommel, and the handle apparently made of horn. With inscriptions in Hebrew and Latin, plus pentacle, 6-pointed star and Chi-Ro cross.

The Sword of the Guardian of the Portal. From the temple of William Gray, Bennington Street, Cheltenham. The sword bears the motto DEO DUCE COMITE FERRO ['With God My Guide, With This Sword My Comrade'] of S.L. MacGregor Mathers, a founder of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Its design appears to be based on an illustration in 'The Magical Ritual of the Sanctum Regnum' by Eliphas Levi. Also inscribed, 'VINCE IN HOC' ['Conquer in This'].

In 2018, this sword featured in the Museum's "Dew of Heaven: Objects of Ritual Magic" exhibition (see photograph below).
