1428 – Talisman

Physical description:
Rectangular paper with magic writing, some within 3 x 3 grids (3 rectangular and 1 square). Partly in Arabic, and the rest in some magical script. Apparently a talisman.

CWOLC 7294 reads:  "This paper is inscribed with Arabic letters. Each side is headed with an Arabic word which means "advantage" or "benefit". Apart from this word and one or two others, including the name of God with which each line of writing begins, the other words belong to a special language of magic. This applies also to the words written in the squares. In some of the squares are numbers, which are also greatly used by magicians."

With accompanying letter, from the British Museum Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts, addressed to a Miss G. Lewer of Berkhamsted, dated 23rd May 1962, giving a brief explanation of the paper.
