Making a 'witch knot' is a well-known way to 'tie up' magic energy. This one is a lover's knot - made while the name of the one whose love was sought was sung out loud.
Likely related to document 8148: "Down through the centuries, many items of tree lore have come to us - such as this one of the lovers' knot. The lovers twist and intertwine the fresh green twig so as to form three circles - his, the child to come, and hers. They embrace and depart, to leave the twig as they set it. The idea is that they will always be bound together till death do them part."
